My 24+ Best Birthday Cake Recipes

June 10, 2026 · In: Cake, Featured, Recipes

No birthday is complete without a special dessert, and in most cases, that means cake! I think one of the most meaningful things you can do to celebrate someone is to make them a cake – even better if it’s their favorite flavor. I’ve collected 24+ of my favorite birthday cake ideas to inspire you, whether you’re looking for the perfect cake to celebrate someone special or you need ideas for your own birthday cake!

Best birthday cake recipe ideas

A quick note about dietary restrictions: I have a small but growing collection of gluten-free dessert recipes, eggless cake recipes, and vegan dessert recipes in case you need them! And in most recipes, you can substitute an equal amount of 1:1 GF baking flour to make the cake gluten-free.

  • Gluten-Free Desserts
  • Eggless Cake Recipes
  • Vegan Cake Desserts

Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting (Classic Birthday Cake)

I’m always nostalgic for yellow cake with chocolate frosting because it’s what my mom made for most of my childhood birthdays. Her version was box cake mix and canned frosting, my version is 100% homemade but captures that soft-yet-fluffy box mix texture. Paired with fudgy frosting and rainbow sprinkles and you’ve got a classic birthday cake!

Cookie Dough Ice Cream Cake

I made this for my birthday this year and I already feel like making it again! It’s homemade cookie dough chunks folded into no-churn chocolate and vanilla ice creams, swirled together on an Oreo cookie crust. After freezing overnight it becomes the ideal sliceable consistency, is so creamy and chocolatey, rich but not overly so, and has the perfect amount of cookie dough chunks in every bite!

Funfetti Cake (or Cupcakes)

Funfetti is the most celebratory flavor of all, no matter what frosting you pair it with (but extra celebratory with funfetti frosting!). I’ve got a variety of funfetti recipes to match the party vibe:

Funfetti Layer Cake

One Reader Says: “Wow! This is going to be my new go to recipe for birthday cakes (with or without the sprinkles) and I only wish I’d found it years ago. I made a trial cake on the weekend before I have to make the real deal for my daughters birthday party in a few weeks and my family can’t stop raving about it. Even my husband who grew up on cake (MIL is an incredible cake maker) said it’s the best cake he’s ever had.” ★★★★★

Funfetti Sheet Cake

The most celebratory sheet cake, perfect for feeding a crowd! Fluffy and moist vanilla cake with rainbow sprinkles perfectly suspended throughout, baked in a 9×13 pan, then topped with delicious vanilla buttercream and rainbow sprinkles.

Funfetti Cupcakes

These funfetti cupcakes are the perfect idea if you don’t want to cut a cake at all! They’re moist and fluffy with just the right amount of sprinkles baked inside, paired with vanilla buttercream and perfect for any celebration.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake

easy cookie cake for birthday

This one is the perfect birthday cake alternative for anyone who loves a thick and chewy, bakery-style chocolate chip cookie! It’s so simple to whip up and can be baked in an 8-inch cake pan or a 9-inch cake pan. I even have scaled the recipe to make a giant Sheet Pan Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake and it’s been such a hit!

A Mini Cake (Serves 2-4 People!)

Any of my small batch cake recipes will be perfect for a birthday date night or small gathering – they serve 2-4 people. You can see all the flavors in my growing collection of small batch cake recipes here. Some notable flavors from the list:

  • Small Batch Chocolate Cake
  • Small Batch Vanilla Cake
  • Small Batch Funfetti Cake
  • Small Batch Black Velvet Cake
  • Small Batch Raspberry Chocolate Cake
  • Small Batch Strawberry Cake

It’s layers of super soft and moist lemon cake with blueberries baked into every bite, filled and frosted with deliciously tangy lemon cream cheese buttercream. I also have a cupcake version of this recipe if you love the flavor combo but want to keep it simple!

Black Forest Cake

This is my husband’s favorite birthday cake and such a classic! My version is layers of decadent chocolate cake brushed with homemade cherry syrup, filled with deliciously light whipped cream frosting and fresh cherry filling.

Carrot Cake

People who love carrot cake really love carrot cake. And for those people I have the perfect recipes depending on whether they want a classic carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, something a little fancier like carrot cake with brown butter cream cheese frosting, OR a small batch carrot cake if you need a smaller dessert to serve 2-4 people.

Cookies & Cream Cake

For the Oreo lovers, a Cookies & Cream cake is always a good time! This recipe is layers of soft vanilla cake with bits of Oreo cookie baked into every bite, filled and frosted with Oreo buttercream.

A Candy Bar Inspired Cake

If you’re making a cake for someone who loves a particular candy bar, it’s always fun to make the cake version for them! I am a candy bar lover, so I have a few cake recipes inspired by my own personal favorites:

Birthday Ice Cream Cake

I made this ice cream cake for my birthday a few years back, inspired by my favorite Cold Stone Ice Cream flavor (Birthday Cake Remix). My ice cream cake version is layers of no-churn birthday cake flavored ice cream with rainbow sprinkles folded in, fudgy brownies, and homemade hot fudge.

Millionaire Cake

millionaire's cake recipe from scratch
chocolate cake with thick caramel filling

Inspired by a $22 slice of cake at Disney World, this homemade version features layers of decadent chocolate cake, thick caramel filling topped with shortbread crumbles, caramel buttercream, and whipped chocolate ganache frosting. The flavors and textures are so incredible with the crunch of the shortbread, the gooey caramel, and the blend of sweet and salty elements – it’s rich in the best ways, and will make any recipient feel like a million bucks.

One-Bowl Chocolate Cake

For any chocolate lover, a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting is always going to be a hit. This one-bowl chocolate cake is so easy to make, moist and fudgy, and perfect with chocolate frosting. I have this recipe available in a variety of sizes:
