Something totally magical happened this week – I got the opportunity to do an Instagram takeover for the one and only Wilton! They’ve been my favorite supplier of cake decorating tools for forever, so to say I was elated would be an understatement. For my takeover tutorial, I showed how to create a whimsical birthday cake that’s as easy to make as it is eye-catching, and I want to share it in blog post form for you here. This fun cake design will make any birthday feel extra special:
I’ve been an admirer of cakes topped with colorful chocolate sails for years, but it wasn’t until just recently that I tried my hand at making my own! I’m so excited to share this tutorial with you, because it could not be easier to do with the right materials. Mainly, some colorful Wilton Candy Melts I found at my local JOANN store. There are so many colors to choose from, you’ll find a color (or combination of colors!) for every look.Read More
How are the Holidays treating you? I’m in full on Christmas spirit mode over here, with so many ideas for festive Holiday cakes and no time to do them all! I like to really sink into this season because there are so many fun things to do with friends and family, and although I love decorating Holiday-themed cakes I try not to spend too much time in the kitchen this time of year because I don’t want to miss any festivities. This Merry & Bright cake was at the tippy top of the list though – it’s the second year in a row I’ve made this design, and I just had to share it with you because it’s so easy to recreate!
One of the most frequent questions I get as a cake decorator is how I get my buttercream cakes so smooth and sharp. To answer you, I’m going to be completely candid here and not pretend that my cakes are absolutely flawless every time. The truth is, with most of the cakes I design, there are plenty of opportunities to hide small flaws in the buttercream finish. A ganache drip over this crease, sprinkles around that bottom edge, and before you know it the cake appears flawless with all those problem areas covered up! Ok, maybe that’s just me being
lazy creative. Despite that, I have developed some skills and learned some tips over the years that help me get pretty darn close to a flawless buttercream finish, and I’m excited to share them all with you!
When the Spring flowers start blooming, a few magical things happen: my happiness level increases almost instantly (I always forget how beautiful Portland gets after a long, rainy Winter!) and I get super inspired to incorporate floral work into my cake and cupcake designs. I’ve taught myself quite a few techniques for creating buttercream blooms over the past year, and I want to pass along some of that knowledge to you with these five super easy floral cupcake designs. They’re perfect for your next Spring-inspired spread, celebrating Mother’s Day, or any ol’ day!
When I first started making cakes, I was so pleased to find out that my local craft store had a whole two aisles full of cake decorating supplies! All of the tools in those aisles were Wilton and they became the foundation of my toolset for years to come. Although I have incorporated some other brands into my cake decorating arsenal I am most definitely still a huge fan of Wilton, especially since their tools have taken a beating from me over the last several years and have held up pristinely.
I wanted to shed a spotlight on my favorite piping tip of all time, the classic Wilton 4B. It’s an open star tip that I’ve come to love for creating unique designs on cakes and cupcakes. It really shines when you get a little crafty with color.
